Actors Who Bent the Truth to Land Their Roles

Hollywood auditions can be highly competitive, and sometimes actors stretch the truth to get their big break. From skills they didn’t have to backgrounds they exaggerated, these small “fibs” occasionally helped them land iconic roles.

While risky, many of these choices ended up working in their favor. In some cases, the actors later learned the required skills and fully justified the roles they initially “embellished” their way into.

Chloë Grace Moretz

Chloë Grace Moretz reportedly told director Martin Scorsese that she was British while auditioning for Hugo. Although she is American, she used a British accent throughout her audition to match the character.

She later admitted she had picked up the accent’s rhythm during time spent in London. Fortunately, Scorsese was not upset when he learned the truth and appreciated her performance.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway told director Ang Lee that she could ride horses while auditioning for Brokeback Mountain. In reality, she had never ridden a horse before but believed she could learn quickly.

Her confidence led her to intense horseback training before filming. However, she still faced a difficult moment on set when a horse threw her off during a rehearsal.

Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams also claimed she was comfortable around horses when auditioning for a role in To the Wonder. In truth, she was allergic to them and initially afraid.

To prepare for the role, she managed her allergies with medication and pushed through her fear. Her determination helped her successfully complete the demanding filming experience.

Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson has admitted that he sometimes exaggerated or invented parts of his background during early auditions in Hollywood. One of his better-known claims was that he had attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

He also said he experimented with different accents depending on the audition setting. Those early audition stories later became part of his offbeat public image, especially after he broke through internationally with Twilight.

Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne falsely claimed he could ride horses during an audition for Elizabeth I. This led to a frightening experience when he was placed on a trained horse without proper preparation.

During filming, the horse moved uncontrollably, nearly causing injury to him and crew members. His director later reprimanded him but also ensured he received proper riding lessons.

Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth has said he sometimes understated his height during auditions because being 6 feet 3 inches tall could make him seem too tall for certain roles.

But Thor was different. The character required a tall, physically imposing presence, so Hemsworth’s real height became an advantage rather than something he needed to hide.

Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis famously lied about her age during her audition for That ‘70s Show. At just 14, she told casting directors she would soon turn 18.

Her confidence and performance ultimately impressed the team more than her actual age. Despite discovering the truth later, producers decided she was perfect for the role.
