Musicians Who Found Success With More Than One Legendary Band

Music history is filled with artists who became synonymous with a single iconic band, but a select few managed to achieve remarkable success multiple times. Whether by joining new groups, forming supergroups, or reinventing themselves after a breakup, these musicians proved that true talent can thrive in more than one musical chapter.

Damon Albarn

Damon Albarn first rose to international fame as the charismatic frontman of Blur, one of the defining bands of the Britpop movement during the 1990s. With hits like Parklife and Song 2, Blur became one of Britain’s most influential rock acts.

Rather than resting on that success, Albarn reinvented himself by co-creating Gorillaz, the virtual band that blended rock, hip-hop, electronic music, and animation. Gorillaz became a global phenomenon, proving Albarn’s creative vision extended far beyond traditional rock music.

Chris Cornell

Chris Cornell first became famous as the powerful lead singer of Soundgarden, one of the pioneering bands of the grunge era. His soaring vocals and songwriting helped define the Seattle music scene alongside bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Cornell later joined Temple of the Dog, a tribute project honoring his late friend Andrew Wood, before forming Audioslave with former members of Rage Against the Machine. Each project showcased a different side of his artistry while cementing his legacy as one of rock’s greatest vocalists.

David Coverdale

David Coverdale earned widespread recognition after becoming the lead singer of Deep Purple during one of the band’s most successful periods. His commanding voice helped the legendary rock group maintain its reputation during the 1970s.

After leaving Deep Purple, Coverdale founded Whitesnake, transforming it into one of the biggest hard rock bands of the 1980s. With chart-topping albums and arena-filling tours, he proved he could successfully lead another iconic group.

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney became one of the world’s most celebrated musicians as a singer, bassist, and songwriter for The Beatles. Alongside John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, he helped create some of the most influential music ever recorded.

Following the Beatles’ breakup, McCartney formed Wings, producing numerous hit albums and singles before launching an equally successful solo career. His ability to remain relevant across multiple decades highlights his extraordinary songwriting and musical versatility.

Dave Mustaine

Dave Mustaine served as Metallica’s lead guitarist during the band’s formative years from 1981 to 1983. He was dismissed shortly before the group recorded its debut album, Kill ’Em All, and therefore did not appear on any Metallica studio release. However, he received songwriting credits on several songs the band later recorded.

After leaving Metallica, Mustaine co-founded Megadeth and established himself as the band’s frontman, guitarist, and principal songwriter. Megadeth went on to become one of thrash metal’s “Big Four” alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax.

Mustaine’s early contributions to Metallica and his later success with Megadeth gave him a lasting influence on two of heavy metal’s most important bands.

Jack White

Jack White first achieved worldwide fame as the guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter of The White Stripes, helping revive garage rock with unforgettable hits like Seven Nation Army. His raw musicianship and distinctive style quickly made him one of the most influential rock artists of his generation.

Rather than limiting himself to one successful project, White expanded his career by co-founding The Raconteurs and later The Dead Weather. Both bands earned critical acclaim, showcasing his versatility across blues, alternative rock, and hard rock while cementing his reputation as a multi-band powerhouse.

Kim Deal

Kim Deal became a defining figure in alternative rock as Pixies’ bassist, co-vocalist, and a member of the band’s original lineup. Her melodic bass playing, distinctive vocals, and songwriting helped shape the group’s influential sound.

In 1989, Deal formed the Breeders with Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly as a creative project outside Pixies. Her twin sister Kelley Deal joined the band later and became part of its best-known lineup.

The Breeders achieved a major breakthrough with their 1993 album Last Splash, which featured the hit single “Cannonball.” The album established Kim Deal as both a key member of Pixies and the principal creative force behind another influential alternative-rock band.
