Many fans were shocked to hear about the death of actress Daveigh Chase at the age of 35. She was known for playing the scary Samara in The Ring and for giving her voice to Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. Her career started when she was very young, and she became part of some of the most loved movies and TV shows of the early 2000s.

Here is a look at her life, the roles that made her famous, and how people are remembering her.

Daveigh Chase died on June 16, 2026, at the age of 35. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner listed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS, as her official cause of death, with chronic polysubstance use identified as a significant contributing condition.

Initial reports from her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, had cited meningitis, severe infections and an earlier hospitalization involving malnutrition. Those preliminary accounts should be distinguished from the medical examiner’s later official determination. Chase’s death prompted tributes to her memorable work in The Ring, Lilo & Stitch and other film and television projects.

She started acting as a little girl

Chase was born in Las Vegas and raised in Albany, Oregon. She began performing as a young child, taking part in local theater productions before moving into television, film, and voice acting.

At age eight, she made her television debut in a 1998 episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Guest appearances in other television series followed as she gradually built her acting career.

Her first big movie role

One of Chase’s early movie roles came in 2001 when she appeared in Donnie Darko. She played Samantha Darko, the younger sister of the main character.

Years later, she returned to that story by appearing in the follow-up film S. Darko. These movies helped introduce her to a wider audience.

Many people remember Chase best as Samara Morgan in the 2002 horror movie The Ring. The movie became one of the biggest horror hits of its time.

Her creepy performance as the ghost girl with long black hair became one of the most famous horror characters in modern movies. Fans still remember the chilling scene where Samara crawls out of a television.

Chase’s performance in The Ring earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain in 2003.

Even though the character frightened audiences, Chase once said she enjoyed playing someone so different. She explained that Samara was not like the cheerful child roles actors often audition for, which made the part exciting for her.

The sweet voice behind Lilo

The same year The Ring was released, Chase also became the voice of Lilo in Disney’s animated movie Lilo & Stitch.

The role showed a completely different side of her talent. Lilo was funny, caring, and full of personality. Many fans still love the character today, and Chase continued to voice Lilo in later spin-offs.

Chase’s work as Lilo received strong praise from critics and animation fans.

She won an Annie Award for her voice acting in Lilo & Stitch. The award recognized her ability to bring the young Hawaiian girl to life with warmth and emotion.

Besides movies, Chase also appeared in several popular television shows.

She had guest roles in series such as Charmed, ER, and Touched by an Angel. These appearances helped build her career during her childhood and teenage years.

A memorable part in Big Love

Another important role came when Chase joined the HBO drama Big Love.

She appeared in 32 episodes as Rhonda Volmer, a young bride in the show’s story. The role allowed her to take on more serious acting work as she grew older.

According to her manager, Chase never cared much about being famous.

He said she often preferred a quiet life instead of attending big Hollywood events. She spent time at her homes in Nevada and Los Angeles and sometimes stayed out of the spotlight for years.

She stepped away from acting

Chase slowly moved away from full-time acting and retired from it in 2015.

While she was no longer appearing in many new projects, her earlier performances continued to find new audiences through streaming services and television reruns.

Later years brought personal struggles

Reports said Chase faced several legal problems later in life, including charges related to drug possession and riding in a stolen car.

These events became part of her later years, but many fans continue to remember the work she did as a talented young actress.

Fans continue to celebrate her work

Daveigh Chase leaves behind a career that many people still remember with affection. She gave audiences one of horror’s most unforgettable villains while also bringing one of Disney’s most loved animated characters to life.

From frightening moviegoers as Samara to making families smile as Lilo, her performances reached very different audiences. Even years after she stepped away from acting, her work remained popular, and many fans are now looking back at the movies and shows that made her a familiar face during the early 2000s.
