Carly Simon has shared a personal update about her health, giving fans a better understanding of why she has stayed out of the spotlight in recent years.

The legendary singer, best known for classic songs like “You’re So Vain,” “Nobody Does It Better,” and “Mockingbird,” revealed that she has been living with Parkinson’s disease. She also shared that she was treated for a form of skin cancer during the same period.

The 83-year-old singer spoke openly about the challenges she has faced and how music has helped her through some of the toughest moments.

Simon said she decided to speak publicly after many fans reached out to ask how she was doing.

She explained that she has been learning how to live with Parkinson’s disease and needed time to understand the diagnosis before sharing it with the public.

According to health experts, Parkinson’s disease affects parts of the brain involved in movement, thinking, and behaviour. Symptoms can include shaking, stiffness, slower movement, balance problems, sleep issues, anxiety, and depression.

Simon said the condition has affected her daily life in different ways.

Living With Unpredictable Symptoms

One of the hardest parts of Parkinson’s, Simon said, is that no two days are the same.

Some days she feels extremely tired and struggles to get moving. On other days, she has more energy and can work, think clearly, and enjoy activities.

She described the illness as unpredictable, saying it does not follow a schedule and can change from day to day.

That uncertainty has become one of the biggest challenges in her life.

Mobility Problems Became More Difficult

Before learning she had Parkinson’s disease, Simon dealt with serious joint problems.

She said arthritis affected both of her knees and one of her hips. To help with the damage, she underwent three joint replacement surgeries.

Even after those operations, her ability to move around continued to get worse.

Simple activities became more difficult. She explained that standing up from deep chairs or low couches often required help from another person.

She even joked that large, soft chairs felt like they were swallowing her whole, making it hard to get back up again.

Her Battle With Skin Cancer

While dealing with Parkinson’s disease, Simon also faced another health issue.

She revealed that doctors treated her for basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer.

The cancer was removed through surgery, but the procedure affected her appearance.

Simon admitted that the changes made her feel more self-conscious about being seen in public. She said she has always been highly critical of her appearance and found this experience emotionally difficult.

Although the cancer was successfully removed, the impact of the surgery added another layer of stress during an already challenging time.

The Emotional Side of Parkinson’s Disease

Simon also spoke honestly about the mental and emotional effects of living with Parkinson’s.

She said the condition can bring anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and apathy.

For her, apathy has been one of the hardest symptoms to explain.

She described feeling unable to find motivation to do things she normally enjoys, even when she wants to be active. It is not simply feeling sad or tired. Instead, it can feel as though the brain is struggling to spark interest in everyday life.

Simon said this emotional side of the disease is often difficult for others to understand.

Why She Stepped Away From Public Life

Fans have noticed that Simon has kept a lower profile in recent years.

She explained that stepping back from public appearances became a way to cope with everything she was experiencing.

The combination of mobility issues, medical treatments, surgery, and emotional challenges made privacy feel like the best option.

Simon compared herself to a bear in hibernation, joking that she had become an “all-season bear.”

Even though she spent less time in public, she stressed that she never stopped living or creating.

Music Remained a Source of Comfort

Throughout her health struggles, Simon continued to turn to music.

She said music has always arrived when she needed it most and has helped her through difficult times.

The singer poured many of her recent experiences into a new album called Comes in Waves, which is scheduled for release on August 14.

Working on the project gave her a creative outlet and helped her focus on something positive while managing her health.

According to Simon, making music reminded her that illness can change a person’s life without becoming the centre of it.

A Message of Strength and Honesty

Simon made it clear that she does not view Parkinson’s disease as a gift or blessing.

She described it as difficult, frustrating, and sometimes frightening.

At the same time, she said she is still learning how to adapt and accept the condition without feeling like she has lost an important part of herself.

Her decision to speak publicly came from a desire to respond to the concern shown by fans over the years.

Carly Simon Says She Is Still Moving Forward

Despite the challenges she faces, Simon said she continues to write, sing, imagine, laugh, and create.

She acknowledged that she now moves more slowly and relies on others more than she once did. She has also learned that every day may look a little different.

Still, the music icon wants fans to know that she remains active and engaged with life.

Her health journey has brought major changes, but it has not stopped her from doing the things she loves.

By sharing her story, Simon has given fans a rare and honest look at the realities of living with Parkinson’s disease while continuing to move forward with strength, creativity, and determination.
