Celebrities Who Were Almost Cast in Friends

When Friends premiered in 1994, few people could have predicted that the sitcom would become one of the most successful television shows in history. The chemistry between Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer helped turn the series into a global phenomenon.

But before the final cast came together, many other actors reportedly auditioned, received offers, or were discussed for key roles. Some turned the show down, while others narrowly missed out during the casting process.

Jane Krakowski reportedly auditioned for the role of Rachel Green before Jennifer Aniston landed the part.

At the time, Krakowski was already building a successful television career and had experience balancing comedy with charm — qualities that made her a strong candidate for the role.

Jon Cryer

Jon Cryer has publicly confirmed that he auditioned for Chandler Bing during the casting process.

Cryer already had sitcom experience and later became famous for Two and a Half Men, but the role eventually went to Matthew Perry, whose sarcastic delivery became one of the defining parts of the series.

Kathy Griffin

Comedian Kathy Griffin reportedly auditioned for Phoebe Buffay before Lisa Kudrow was cast.

Griffin’s energetic comedic style made her an interesting possibility for the eccentric character. However, Kudrow’s softer and more quirky performance helped shape Phoebe into one of television’s most beloved sitcom personalities.

Leah Remini

Leah Remini famously auditioned for Monica Geller before Courteney Cox took the role.

Remini later revealed that she genuinely believed she had a strong chance of being cast. Producers reportedly liked her performance, but the role eventually went to Cox, whose chemistry with the rest of the cast helped define the series.

Eric McCormack

Before starring in Will & Grace, Eric McCormack reportedly auditioned for Ross Geller.

McCormack had the intellectual and awkward comedic energy that likely appealed to casting directors searching for Ross. However, David Schwimmer eventually secured the role, and some reports suggest the character was partially shaped around Schwimmer’s strengths.

Jane Lynch

Jane Lynch reportedly auditioned for Phoebe Buffay during the early casting process.

Known today for her commanding comedic presence in projects like Glee and Best in Show, Lynch likely would have brought a very different style to the role.

Louis Mandylor

Actor Louis Mandylor reportedly auditioned for Joey Tribbiani before Matt LeBlanc won the role.

The role required someone capable of balancing humor, confidence, and lovable immaturity. LeBlanc’s chemistry with the ensemble became one of the show’s greatest strengths, especially in Joey’s friendship with Chandler.

Ellen DeGeneres

Before launching her hugely successful daytime television career, Ellen DeGeneres was reportedly discussed as a possible comedic fit for Friends during early development conversations.

Although she was never seriously attached to a specific main role publicly, her name occasionally appears in retrospective casting discussions because of her popularity in 1990s sitcom television.

Craig Bierko

Craig Bierko reportedly auditioned for Chandler Bing and was considered a strong candidate before Matthew Perry secured the role.

Bierko later admitted feeling disappointed after missing out because the series quickly became a massive success. Producers reportedly liked his comedic ability, but Perry’s specific timing and personality ultimately stood out.

Tiffani Thiessen

Tiffani Thiessen reportedly auditioned for Rachel Green during the early stages of casting.

At the time, Thiessen was already famous thanks to Saved by the Bell. However, producers reportedly felt she was slightly too young for the character compared to the direction they wanted for the ensemble dynamic.

Elizabeth Berkley

Elizabeth Berkley also reportedly auditioned for Rachel Green before the role went to Jennifer Aniston.

Like Tiffani Thiessen, Berkley was already associated with Saved by the Bell, which made her a recognizable television face during the early 1990s.

Hank Azaria

Hank Azaria auditioned for Joey Tribbiani before later appearing on Friends as David, Phoebe’s scientist boyfriend.

Azaria reportedly came close to landing Joey but ultimately lost the role to Matt LeBlanc. Ironically, his recurring role later became one of the show’s most memorable supporting performances.

Nancy McKeon

Nancy McKeon reportedly auditioned for Monica Geller during casting.

Known for The Facts of Life, McKeon already had substantial sitcom experience and reportedly impressed producers. However, Courteney Cox’s chemistry with the group helped secure her role as Monica.

Nicollette Sheridan

Nicollette Sheridan reportedly auditioned for one of the major female roles before the final cast was assembled.

Sheridan later became famous through Desperate Housewives, but early casting discussions around Friends showed how many future television stars were competing for the project.
