When Friends premiered in 1994, few people could have predicted that the sitcom would become one of the most successful television shows in history. The chemistry between Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer helped turn the series into a global phenomenon.
But before the final cast came together, many other actors reportedly auditioned, received offers, or were discussed for key roles. Some turned the show down, while others narrowly missed out during the casting process.
Jane Krakowski
Jane Krakowski reportedly auditioned for the role of Rachel Green before Jennifer Aniston landed the part.
At the time, Krakowski was already building a successful television career and had experience balancing comedy with charm — qualities that made her a strong candidate for the role.
Jon Cryer
Jon Cryer has publicly confirmed that he auditioned for Chandler Bing during the casting process.

Actor Louis Mandylor reportedly auditioned for Joey Tribbiani before Matt LeBlanc won the role.

Craig Bierko
Craig Bierko reportedly auditioned for Chandler Bing and was considered a strong candidate before Matthew Perry secured the role.

Like Tiffani Thiessen, Berkley was already associated with Saved by the Bell, which made her a recognizable television face during the early 1990s.
Hank Azaria
Hank Azaria auditioned for Joey Tribbiani before later appearing on Friends as David, Phoebe’s scientist boyfriend.
Azaria reportedly came close to landing Joey but ultimately lost the role to Matt LeBlanc. Ironically, his recurring role later became one of the show’s most memorable supporting performances.
Nancy McKeon
Nancy McKeon reportedly auditioned for Monica Geller during casting.
Known for The Facts of Life, McKeon already had substantial sitcom experience and reportedly impressed producers. However, Courteney Cox’s chemistry with the group helped secure her role as Monica.
Nicollette Sheridan
Nicollette Sheridan reportedly auditioned for one of the major female roles before the final cast was assembled.
Sheridan later became famous through Desperate Housewives, but early casting discussions around Friends showed how many future television stars were competing for the project.
