Parenting is demanding enough when two people share the load — doing it alone takes a different kind of strength altogether. Those who manage it deserve genuine recognition.

Yet many of today’s most recognized celebrities grew up in exactly that situation, raised entirely by their fathers. Whether their parents went their separate ways or their mothers passed away, these men stepped up and saw it through.

Born Michael Gerard Tyson, the boxing legend found himself under the roof of his trainer, Cus D’Amato, following the death of his mother when he was 16.

D’Amato had no biological connection to Tyson, yet he formally became his legal guardian and committed to raising him. Tyson’s biological father, Purcell Tyson, had been absent from his life entirely.

Courtney Michelle Love, born Harrison, spent her early childhood in San Francisco alongside both parents before they went their separate ways in 1970 and her mother entered a new marriage.

That second marriage also ended in 1972, after which the family relocated to New Zealand. Love’s time there was short-lived — following her expulsion from school, she was returned to Oregon and placed in the care of her former stepfather.
