Superhero movies dominate modern Hollywood.
Franchises built around comic book characters have generated billions of dollars worldwide, launched careers, and turned actors into household names. Yet many of these iconic roles almost went to someone else.
Casting decisions are rarely straightforward. Some actors decline parts because of scheduling conflicts. Others are unsure about long-term franchise commitments, while some simply do not connect with the character.
Emily Blunt – Black Widow and Peggy Carter
Emily Blunt was reportedly offered opportunities connected to both Marvel’s Black Widow and Peggy Carter before those roles ultimately went to other actresses. Contractual obligations and scheduling issues reportedly played a significant role in the decisions. Scarlett Johansson eventually became one of the defining faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Natasha Romanoff.
Tom Cruise – Iron Man
Before Robert Downey Jr. became synonymous with Tony Stark, Tom Cruise spent years linked to a possible Iron Man adaptation. Cruise was reportedly interested in the project during earlier development stages but ultimately did not move forward. When Marvel Studios launched the MCU with Iron Man in 2008, Downey’s performance became one of the most important casting decisions in modern cinema.
Matt Damon – Daredevil
Matt Damon has publicly acknowledged that he was approached regarding superhero projects over the years, including discussions connected to Daredevil. The role ultimately went to Ben Affleck. Although that particular film received mixed reactions, the character later became a major part of Marvel’s television and streaming universe. Damon has often said that creative teams and directors play a major role in whether he accepts a project.
Josh Hartnett – Superman
In the early 2000s, Josh Hartnett reportedly turned down opportunities to play Superman. At the time, Hartnett was one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young actors. He later explained that he was cautious about being tied to a franchise for many years.
Matthew McConaughey – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Matthew McConaughey reportedly passed on a significant role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The actor has said that he carefully evaluates franchise commitments and preferred other opportunities at that stage of his career. The Marvel franchise continued its commercial success without him. His decision highlights how established stars sometimes prioritize flexibility over long-term franchise involvement.
Leonardo DiCaprio – Spider-Man
Before Tobey Maguire was cast as Peter Parker, Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly held discussions about a potential Spider-Man project. The role never materialized, and DiCaprio instead pursued a different path focused largely on dramatic films. Meanwhile, Spider-Man became one of the most valuable superhero franchises in entertainment history.
Nicolas Cage – Superman
Nicolas Cage famously came close to playing Superman in Superman Lives, a project that was ultimately canceled before production. Although he did not technically reject the role, the film’s collapse prevented what would have been a highly unusual interpretation of the character. The story has become one of Hollywood’s most famous “what if” scenarios.
Joaquin Phoenix – Doctor Strange
Joaquin Phoenix was heavily rumored to be in contention for Doctor Strange before Marvel cast Benedict Cumberbatch. Reports indicated that discussions progressed significantly, but Phoenix ultimately did not join the project. Cumberbatch went on to portray the character across multiple MCU films.
Dougray Scott – Wolverine
Dougray Scott was originally cast as Wolverine before production delays involving Mission: Impossible 2 prevented him from taking the role. The part ultimately went to Hugh Jackman, whose portrayal became one of the most successful casting choices in superhero movie history.
Mel Gibson – Odin
Mel Gibson reportedly turned down the role of Odin in Marvel’s Thor. The character eventually went to Anthony Hopkins, whose performance brought considerable gravitas to the franchise. The Thor films became a major part of Marvel’s overall success.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt – Star-Lord
Joseph Gordon-Levitt reportedly passed on the opportunity to play Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy. The role eventually went to Chris Pratt, whose performance helped transform the character into one of Marvel’s most popular heroes.
Will Smith – Superman
Will Smith has revealed that he was approached regarding Superman earlier in his career but chose not to pursue the role. He later explained that he was concerned about audience expectations and comparisons to previous portrayals of the character.
John Krasinski – Captain America
John Krasinski was among the actors considered for Captain America before Chris Evans secured the role. Krasinski has spoken humorously about the experience, noting that seeing Evans in costume convinced him Marvel had made the right choice.
Jason Momoa – Drax
Before becoming Aquaman, Jason Momoa reportedly turned down the role of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy. Momoa later explained that he wanted to avoid being typecast in certain kinds of roles. His eventual casting as Aquaman helped launch a successful superhero career on the DC side.
Jake Gyllenhaal – Batman
Jake Gyllenhaal was reportedly considered during the search for a new Batman when future casting decisions were being evaluated. Although he never officially played the character, the possibility generated significant discussion among fans and industry observers.
