The Saxophone Changed Everything
A major turning point came when Kenny G was 10 years old. One day, he watched a saxophone performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”
The performance made a huge impression on him. He became fascinated by the sound of the instrument and wanted to learn how to play it himself.
After convincing his mother to rent a soprano saxophone, he started practicing. Unlike with the piano, he felt a real connection to the saxophone.
He spent time teaching himself and working on his skills. What began as a childhood interest soon turned into a serious passion.
Hard Work Started Paying Off Early
As a teenager, Kenny G continued improving his saxophone playing. His dedication did not go unnoticed.
In 1974, when he was just 17 years old, he received an opportunity that many young musicians could only dream about. Thanks to a recommendation from his music teacher, he was offered a solo performance spot with Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra.
The job only lasted for a weekend, but it was an important step forward. It allowed him to perform with experienced musicians and gain valuable experience.

He Made Sure He Had Another Option

A Record Deal Opened a New Chapter
After completing his studies, Kenny G’s music career began moving forward more quickly.
One of the biggest moments came when Clive Davis, the president of Arista Records, offered him a solo recording contract in 1982.
This opportunity gave him a chance to focus on music professionally. It was also around this time that Kenneth Bruce Gorelick began using the stage name that would become famous around the world: Kenny G.
The new record deal marked the start of his solo journey. He was no longer simply a talented musician playing with others. He was now building a career under his own name.
Success Did Not Happen Overnight
