Just Fontaine still owns the record
French striker Just Fontaine scored an incredible 13 goals at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. No player has managed to beat that number since.
Fontaine made a dream start by scoring three goals against Paraguay. He kept scoring in every match after that. He added two goals against Yugoslavia, one against Scotland, two more against Northern Ireland, and another in the semi-final against Brazil.
He finished the tournament by scoring four goals against West Germany in the third-place match. Fontaine never played in another World Cup, but his amazing tournament is still part of football history.
Sandor Kocsis came close with 11 goals
Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis scored 11 goals at the 1954 World Cup.
He opened the tournament with a hat trick against South Korea and then scored four goals against West Germany in the next match. Hungary was one of the strongest teams in the world at the time, and Kocsis was a big reason for that success.
He also scored two goals in the quarter-final against Brazil and another two in the semi-final against Uruguay. Although Hungary reached the final, Kocsis could not score, and West Germany lifted the trophy.
Gerd Muller scored 10 goals in 1970
Germany legend Gerd Muller had an unforgettable 1970 World Cup.
He scored once against Morocco before hitting hat tricks against both Bulgaria and Peru in the group stage. Muller then scored the winning goal against England in the quarter-finals.
He added two more goals in the semi-final against Italy to finish with 10 goals. Muller later returned to another World Cup and became the tournament’s all-time leading scorer before his record was eventually broken years later.

Brazil narrowly missed out on the title after losing to Uruguay in the final stage of the tournament. Ademir did not score in that deciding match but provided an assist.

Ronaldo powered Brazil to glory
