Actors and actresses make big choices all the time. Sometimes they say yes to a movie, and sometimes they turn it down. A role may not fit their schedule, the story may not interest them, or they may simply feel it is not the right project.

But in Hollywood, it can be hard to know which movies will become huge successes. Over the years, many famous stars have passed on roles that later became some of the most talked-about films in the world. Here are some celebrities who turned down movie roles that went on to become major hits.

Eddie Murphy missed out on several blockbuster films

Eddie Murphy has enjoyed a long and successful career, but even he has a few movie regrets.

The actor has openly shared that he turned down roles in several films that later became massive hits. Among them were Ghostbusters (1984), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and Rush Hour (1998).

All three movies became popular with audiences and earned a special place in movie history. Looking back, Murphy admitted he wishes he had been part of those projects.

Haley Lu Richardson passed on a role in Midsommar

Richardson revealed that she received the script for Midsommar, the horror film that later helped make Florence Pugh a bigger star. She said she enjoyed reading the script and thought it was very well written.

Still, she decided not to move forward. After working on another intense project, she did not want to take on another disturbing role. She felt strongly about her choice and did not even attend a meeting about the film.

Even though Midsommar became a well-known movie, Richardson said she believes things worked out the way they were meant to. She also praised Florence Pugh’s performance in the film.

Jackie Chan turned down a role that changed direction

Everything Everywhere All at Once became one of the most celebrated films of recent years. It earned awards, praise from critics, and a large fan following.

What many people do not know is that the movie was first planned differently. The directors originally imagined Jackie Chan as the main character, while Michelle Yeoh would play his wife.

Chan did not take the role, and the filmmakers later changed the story. The lead character was rewritten as a woman, and Michelle Yeoh became the star of the movie.

The change worked out very well. Yeoh earned major award recognition, including an Oscar win. She later joked that Chan had done her a huge favor by passing on the part.

Madonna still thinks about The Matrix

Few science fiction films have had the impact of The Matrix. The movie became a worldwide success and remains popular decades later.

Madonna once revealed that she had the chance to appear in the film but turned it down. She later said it was one of her biggest career regrets.

Although she did not say exactly which role she was offered, many people believe it may have been Trinity, the character eventually played by Carrie-Anne Moss.

Madonna described The Matrix as one of the best movies ever made and admitted that she still regrets missing the opportunity.

Jennifer Aniston passed on a beloved romantic comedy

The romantic comedy Serendipity became a favorite for many movie fans. The film starred Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack and continues to be remembered years after its release.

Before Beckinsale joined the project, the lead role was reportedly offered to Jennifer Aniston.

At the time, Aniston was starring in the hit television show Friends. According to the film’s director, she did not want to be known only for romantic comedy roles and decided not to take the part.

Ironically, Aniston later appeared in several successful romantic comedies and became one of the genre’s most recognizable stars.

Matt Damon walked away from a fortune

Matt Damon may have missed one of the biggest financial opportunities in Hollywood history.

The actor revealed that he was offered a role in Avatar, the science fiction film directed by James Cameron. Along with the role, he would have received a percentage of the movie’s profits.

Damon later shared that the deal could have earned him around $250 million. However, he was already committed to working on the Bourne movie series and chose to stay with that project.

While Avatar became one of the highest-grossing films ever made, Damon stood by the decision he made at the time.

Beyoncé declined a role in Disney’s live-action hit

Disney’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast was a major success around the world.

Reports said that the filmmakers wanted Beyoncé to provide the voice of Plumette, one of the movie’s characters.

Beyoncé decided not to take the role, and the part eventually went to actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

The film went on to perform very well at the box office and became one of Disney’s most successful live-action remakes.

Charlie Hunnam stepped away from Fifty Shades of Grey

For a period of time, Charlie Hunnam was expected to play Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Fans were excited about the casting, but Hunnam later left the project before filming began. Reports said the actor stepped away because of personal reasons.

The role then went to Jamie Dornan, who became closely linked with the character after the movie’s release.

Fifty Shades of Grey attracted huge attention worldwide and became a major commercial success, leading to additional films in the series.

Choosing which movie to make is never easy. Actors often have to decide based on timing, personal interests, or other commitments.

In some cases, those choices lead them away from films that become worldwide hits. Still, many of these stars have built successful careers and found other opportunities along the way.

Their stories show that even in Hollywood, nobody can predict exactly which movie will become the next big success.
